Florida Designers at Life’s a Label Fashion Show

Happy Holidays from IFF! Has it been as crazy a holiday for you as it has been for me? Well, I’m just glad to get back to what’s important…blogging! I have a couple of posts I’ve been excited to share so let’s get this party started…

Part of the fun of getting to know Orlando and growing this blog is being able to meet and see the work of local fashion designers. It’s impossible to not be inspired by people who have a deep love and passion for fashion as an art form. I recently experienced this excitement for fashion at Life’s a Label Fashion Show produced by Welcome Home Entertainment, which features local up and coming Florida designers. It was great to see how the designers embodied Florida style but added their own twist and flavor. But as the saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words” so I will leave you with some of my favorite looks from the event. There was a lot of great local talent at the show and I will be featuring them on future posts.

Celebrating a Year of Fashion

It’s true, your eyes aren’t deceiving you-- IFF is officially one year old! You might recall that for my 6-month anniversary I thanked some important individuals that helped IFF grow (see here). This time around I’m excited to thank even more people. Now I truly understand the saying, “it takes a village to raise a child” because this was really the case for IFF! My baby blog couldn’t have made it without all of this great support. The Orlando community has accepted the blog with open arms and along the way I’ve met some amazing people. A big thanks to:

Harriett’s Park Ave Fashion Show

Lights, camera, action! It was finally time for the main event: Harriett’s Park Avenue Fashion Show (read about my backstage experience here). As soon as I heard the music start I quickly headed to the media pit to take my place. ‘Alright, Iris—Take a deep breath and dive in.’

There I was with my tiny DSLR, holding it tightly like a newborn baby while I squeezed my way into the media mosh pit. So what if I was tripping over somebody’s tripod and occasionally getting elbowed when a professional photographer hit the shutter button. I didn’t mind it at all. Another photographer was kind enough to point out a small but cozy corner on the platform for me to sit. Clearly, I must have looked lost and confused. She looked up at me, smiled, and motioned for me to sit. Finally, I got my spot and I got my camera, that’s all I need. Now to document the show! Check out below for some of my favorite looks.

Harriet’s Park Avenue Fashion Show: Behind the Scenes

I am still in disbelief that little IFF was invited to cover one of the biggest fashion events in Orlando! I could barely contain my excitement as I walked up to the media check-in counter. I eagerly placed the media pass around my neck and quickly headed towards the entrance where two guards greeted me with big smiles and opened the double doors as if royalty had arrived. There was a flash of darkness and a blast of cold air that made my skin tingle. As my eyes (and body) became accustomed to the sudden change I began to see flashes of purple lights and haze. There I was, inside of the big white tent- sparkling in all its glory. I made it!

I am beyond excited to offer the first giveaway on IFF!! I can’t think of a better way to thank you all for following. For those of you who follow IFF on Facebook (which you should!), then you know that Macy’s is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in partnership with Vanidades Magazine by saluting Carlos Santana as the 2012 Icon of Style. Some of you attended the fabulous events in Macy’s all over the U.S. and others entered the contest to win a trip for two to Las Vegas with two VIP tickets to “An Intimate Evening with Santana.” But if you missed these opportunities, don’t fret. Macy’s has been wonderful enough to offer IFF readers this ultra-fabulous Carlos by Carlos Santana “On the Fringe Tour” Bag valued at $108!

This is your last chance to join in on the celebration and what better way to do it then to feel like a rock star yourself? Fringe, leather, studs, and sexy red lining – pass me the air guitar because I am a full on rock star. I grab that air guitar and I begin to feel the hot spotlights shining on me while I look out into a dark room with floating lights. Slowly, I hear the deafening roar of the crowd get closer and closer. Is it just the bag or is it time for my solo?

My Addiction Remixed: A Sheer Maxi Skirt

Ever get an obsession to a recent purchase? Like an amazing red lipstick that you can’t stop wearing or a pair of flats that are about to disintegrate because you can’t take them off. Well, here it is: My name is Iris and I’m addicted to my maxi skirt. There, I said it.

Guest Post: Orlando's Fashion's Night In

Lovely IFF readers, allow me to introduce you to Jordan! A very sweet girl and awesome blogger. I invited her to tell us about her experience at Orlando's Fashion Night In. Enjoy!

I recently attended the CFL Blog Conference and met a ton of new, fun bloggers! Iris was one of them... I loved her outfit that day, and knew from our conversations that we could be IRL (in real life) friends as well as blogging friends!

I recently moved to the area and work for the iLSnetwork.com and 407Apartments.com helping people find the perfect apartment for them out of the many apartments in Orlando that will fit their needs and budget. It's been fun to find new people to be friends with as well as fun stores to shop at!

Enough about my job though, let's talk fashion!

Endless Summer

Can you believe today is the official last day of summer? Say it isn’t so! It’s my favorite season, so it brings sadness to my heart. Luckily, I'm well prepared to deal with this temperature change -- I live in Florida. There you go, problem solved. Well, not really because Orlando dares to be too cold for comfort in the November and December months (Sheesh!). So, flip-flops and cute crop tops aren’t really an option at that point. But, I will do my best to keep the summer months alive in my heart, if I can’t in my wardrobe. Since I’m not ready to say good-bye, this post is dedicated to one of my favorite summer pieces. The crop top.

Fashion's Night Out in Orlando

It might not be New York, Milan, or Paris but Mall at the Millenia in Orlando sure knows how to celebrate Fashion’s Night Out. I made it to Neiman Marcus right on time for the fashion show and even managed to grab some seats before they were all taken. The styling was beautiful, of course. They featured some great fall trends: mixed greens, versatile jackets, navy paired with blacks and brights, menswear influenced pieces fitted for women, and (my favorite) digital prints. Sigh, if only I had an endless supply of money.

My Inspiration Captured: The Puerto Rico Version

Ever have one of those moments where you are in a familiar place that you’ve been to several times but suddenly something feels very new? I get that feeling every time I look through my camera lens. Something about peering through that lens, changes the dynamic of a place. All of a sudden, items that seemed old and boring have a new life and look fresh and charming.

Neon Caribbean Colors

You might recall how some colors trigger memories of my childhood in Puerto Rico (see here). Well, this time it wasn’t just a memory. I finally went back to my little island and relived it all again. Of course, I wasted no time to bust out the neon bright colors. I wore this lively ensemble to an impromptu boat ride around the southwest coast of the island. Not exactly a boat tour type of outfit (one needs a bikini when coasting along a Caribbean paradise). But it turned out perfectly because all around me the vivid colors of my outfit were reflected in the scenery.

Farewell to the Big City and Bright Lights

All good things must come to an end.

This was the case for my wonderful experience in Chicago. As a thank you to the city, I wanted to say farewell in the most fabulous way I know how: by dressing up, of course! Now, what do I wear to both say good-bye and celebrate a dear friend? I wear bright, fun prints and interesting statement jewelry. That meant this dress was perfectly suited as a farewell party outfit. Although farewells could potentially be solemn, the vivid colors liven up the event and bring some sparkle to the night. The playful patterns look like they are dancing all over the dress reflecting my own celebration that evening. I added hot pink pumps to bring an extra kick to my step. Then, I topped it off with a dramatic gold shoulder necklace because you can never go wrong with draping yourself in jewelry. And voila, instant party in a dress!

Maxi Skirt and BCBG clutch in Chicago

It was my first night in Chicago. The plan was to go Navy Pier and then to an amazing dinner at Girl and the Goat. I wasn’t privy to all the details of the evening so you know what happens to my imagination, it quickly finds ways to fill in the holes. I began planning my outfit…

Micro Mini: The Thrifty Tweed Skirt

“Clothes look best on tall women.” If you are petite, you’ve probably heard that several times before. Well, pssssh to that I say. There is one thing that petite girls can seriously rock and that’s the micro mini. They look short but not so short that you wonder if you are going to get an unwelcomed preview. Maxi skirts, knee-length skirts, and mid-calf skirts on petite girls are sure to raise a few eyebrows by onlookers (although, that has never stopped me before and it shouldn’t stop you either). But not the micro mini, it flatters petite legs by making them look longer and leaner, like they belong on a runway model (or at least a taller girl). Better yet, we can wear them just about anywhere because it doesn’t look inappropriately short. Night out? Shopping? Hell, just doing some grocery shopping? Throw on that micro mini. You know I’m doing it.

Accessories that “Beat the Heat”: From Head to Toe

If your gym routine consists of running from an air conditioned office, to an air conditioned car, to an air conditioned home, then you are most certainly finding yourself in the dead of summer. Oh how we longed for these days in the chilly winter. But somehow are memory deceived us because we never remember it quite as hot, quite as sticky, and quite as annoying. Still, we are troopers, beating the sun and chugging on with our day-to-day tasks. In an attempt to make those days a little less stifling I’ve posted about outfits (here), beauty products (here), and hair-styles (here) to help keep you cool, calm, and collected.

Yet, I know what you're thinking, “Iris, but I don’t really want to change anything major. Isn’t there one or two quick fixes?” Of course there is, let’s talk about some essential accessories for beating the heat that well go perfectly with any of your ensembles. From head to toe:

Sofia Vergara Wedges: Proud and Sexy

Hair Tricks to “Beat the Heat”: Buns and Accessories

One of the trickiest parts of surviving the summer heat is getting your hair under control. When going out during the summer, I’d much rather remind people of an Aphrodite-like silky, shiny hair rather than a Medusa-like snake tangled hair. But humidity, heat, and wind make it difficult for any of us to display our Goddess tresses. So what do I do to keep it alluring but still in control? I revamp the bun.

I would love to say that I wear my hair long, down, and flowy, but that’s just not true. I spend most of my summers with my hair picked up to stay fresh and flawless. But summer is very long here in Florida (uh...most of the year) so wearing a bun can get old and unappealing very fast. Fortunately, I’ve picked up a few ways to make an otherwise plain hairstyle feel a little more divine. Use these tips to bring out your inner hair Goddess even in the fieriest of summers.

My “Beat the Heat” Products: Prime, Set, and Go!

Is your face melting by midday? Do you find that your makeup is basically gone by the time you get to work because the blazing summer sun has melted it off? If so, it sounds like you need the help of some serious summer beauty products. Luckily for you, I’ve gone through a lot of trial and error in trying to figure out how to “Beat the Heat’ and keep my makeup fresh. My process is all about prevention. What can I do to stop looking like a Salvador Dali painting? I prime and set. Below is my routine for going out on a hot day or evening.

Marie Claire: Women in Business Event

Orlando, The City Beautiful, just as we were growing to be the best of friends, the city threw some curve balls. These include torrential rainfalls on the only days I don’t have my umbrella, crowding of the malls with busloads of tourists on the only days I have time to shop, and closing every restaurant near me at 9:00pm on the days I need to grab food late.

But then, just as I was about to give up hope on the city, I got invited to The Women in Business Event hosted by Marie Claire and Ruth Chris Steakhouse. It’s almost as if the city wanted to cut me a break and take me out on a nice date. This time it pulled out all the stops.

"Beat the Heat" and Keep it Cool

Imagine this, if you will:

You open the door of your cool, even cold air conditioned home, cautiously step outside - and immediately feel like you’ve been engulfed in flames. As you rush to your car, your skin starts to boil, melt. You throw open your car door, crank the AC, and stand as the car crackles. You wait.

When the temperature inside the car registers a chilly 95 degrees, you’re ready to climb in, drive away, and start your day. Welcome to the Sunshine State.

Now, don’t let all this firey talk fool you, I love this state. I’ve lived in Florida for most of my life (and before that, the Caribbean) and I’ve resigned myself to the heat. In fact, after years of sweating, uh, misting lightly, I’ve found ways to make it look good. And I’m excited to share my tips and tricks with the Florida Fashion Blogger Link-Up.

Colors of My Youth

It’s no secret that I’m a Florida girl. I have spent most of my life living in some city in Florida, which I love. However, I can’t help that occasionally I have angst over the memories of my distant hometown. It’s as if the island whispers to me at night, “Come back…we miss you”. I find myself longing for the hot summer days that I spent lazily on a hammock by the water. How did I rush so quickly through life that those carefree tropical summers seem like memories from a former life?

Thrifty Thursday: The War for the Crossbody Bag

I don’t know about you guys but Thrifty Thursdays are my favorite posts. I get way more excited from finding a diamond in the ruff than grabbing clothing from an already styled mannequin. Don’t get me wrong, there is also a special joy that comes with getting a spankin’ new piece but right now I’m talking about a different type of joy.

Loving Me Some California

A little while ago the company I work for sent me to San Diego for a conference. I know, what a sacrifice. I absolutely love that city. The tranquil ambiance and unique culture make the city irresistible to any hardworking business woman. As soon as I stepped off the plane I couldn't help but be pulled into the relaxed California vibe. I tried my best to stay focused but by the second day of the conference I had let my hair down and left the black power suit somewhere on the the hotel room floor. Instead, I slipped into bright shorts, a breezy linen blouse, comfy leather sandals, and a cool Carlos Santana fedora hat. I had fully accepted and integrated into the San Diego laid back philosophy. Sure, there were seminars occurring and meetings I should have probably attended, but who has time for that when I'm busy strolling around the marina? Sometimes a girl has to re-evaluate her priorities and take some time to enjoy a beautiful sunny afternoon. I'm sure my employer would understand...maybe.

Taking Care of Business (with my Christian Louboutin)

You might remember from this post that I was surprised on my birthday with a pair of Christian Louboutin Rolando pumps. Since then, I’ve been debating when and where to debut these beauties. After all, you can never have a “first time” again, so it had to be special. I wanted it to be an event where it would really stand out among the crowd. After much debate, I decided the perfect occasion was my profession’s annual conference. It is typically known as a conservative and professional gathering, but why not spice it up with some unexpected red soles? When I slipped the pumps on, I felt an instant burst of excitement and energy running from my toes to the top of my head. It was official, I was ready to network, discuss research ideas, and negotiate contracts. I was unstoppable. When I crossed my legs during seminars there weren’t eyes in the room that didn’t gravitate towards those red soles. Who can blame them? It’s definitely not a pair of shoes for the shy at heart. And I definitely was not feeling shy. I was equipped with my power suit and my Loubis. I was ready to stand out and use that confidence to my advantage. In the end, it turned out to be a great conference with new contacts and potential clients. Was it because of the Louboutins? Or my confidence? Or a little bit of both? I guess I'll never know!

My Blog’s Six Monthiversary!

Can you believe it? Iris Focused on Fashion turns six months old today. Wow, how time flies! Reflecting back on those early days, I’m struck by how much this baby blog misbehaved – refusing to follow the simplest of instructions, acting out by posting in outrageous fonts, refusing to stay on deadline. Alas, this blog has grown up and I’m no longer an intrepid new momma, we’ve grown up together.

Chantilly Lace: Not just your grandma’s lace

My grandmother’s table doilies and her Sunday church dress are the first things that come to mind when I think of Chantilly lace. Gentle, soft, and feminine – just like my grandmother. But it’s time for a new outlook on this traditional lace. I’ve been determined to step out of my comfort zone and re-evaluate my preconceived notions. With this new approach in mind, I decided to reinvent how I wear lace. In fact, this time lace would not be so delicate. This time there would be a twist.  Lace will now have a tougher look. Now it’s Chantilly lace with an edge. Probably not grandma approved but sometimes a girl has to break out of her obedient role and introduce a little bit of mischievousness and defiance into her life.

Springing Forward

Look around: the earth is stirring, waking up from a deep slumber. Roses are peeking out of their buds, leaves are squirming out of their stems, and birds are testing their wings against the cool breeze. Spring has sprung and brought with it transformation.

Thrifty Thursday: A Wool Coat

I realize it’s officially Spring, I live in Florida, and I’m wearing a coat. I just couldn’t resist sharing this awesome find with you! Can you believe that I found this wool coat at a thrift store for $5?!! Yes, $5! That’s every Floridian girl’s dream. Rarely do I want to spend $100+ on a coat that I’ll wear once a year or occasionally when I travel up north for work. In fact, I’m notorious for assuming I’ll keep warm during a winter conference with just my business suit. It’s got a coat –err, jacket thing, right? Wrong. It’s really cold up north. Not Florida cold. But I don’t learn and I continue to freeze. Admittedly, I endure frost bite because I feel that nothing within my budget looks sophisticated enough for that kind of event. So, I hit a gold mine when I saw this piece at the thrift store! Besides the amazing cost, the silky lining makes me feel like I’ve splurged on a designer coat. You’ve heard of the “Power Suit”? Well, this feels like the “Power Coat”. Cold chill, blizzard, or snow storm can’t keep me from my next winter conference! Finally, I won’t be the girl shivering in the business suit while other attendees roll their eyes and go, “She must be from Florida.”

Fashion Tip: Think of creative ways to make the thrift store pieces your own. My coat had missing buttons and no belt but that didn’t stop me from taking it home! Buttons, fitting, and missing accessories can all be fixed. Just add a little patience and love!

A Girl and Her First Louboutins

Ever take the moment to think about the special gifts you’ve received in your life that left a lasting impression? A recent surprise birthday gift has had me thinking about those special first gifts. My first Barbie, bike with training wheels, make-up set, and of course, heels are just a few of those gifts that invoke cherished memories of my childhood. My recent surprise birthday gift will be forever ranked as one of those adored first gifts. A pair of Christian Louboutin! I’m not in a place in my life where I can enjoy that kind of luxury so this day will be permanently etched in my memory. Why is it so special? Well, I found out that my husband and family united to research all they could about Christian Louboutin and save their hard earned money just to buy me shoes! And now, these will always be more than a pair of shoes for me. Imagine my poor family calling and visiting Christian Louboutin vendors all over the state! They never gave up, they never judged, and they never thought it would be a silly purchase. All they wanted was to put a smile on my face and it was definitely accomplished. I will always remember this day as the day that my family put aside all reason and splurged just for me, just to get me my very first Louboutin.

Honestly, I hesitated posting this video because I reacted so dorky and silly. But it really shows how I felt that day. I can write about it but nothing captures the moment like a video! Plus, it gives you a glimpse of who I am.  After all, you read my blog (I love you for that)! I apologize for all the background noise. This was not a planned video!

What surprise gifts have left a lasting memory in your life?

Beach Neutrals

How fun are spring trends lately? Bright, bold colors, and stripes are just some of my favorite. Actually, I’ve been so crazy about these trends that the neutral clothing in my closet has been neglected. The poor things. I skip over them as I reach for my purple jeans and bright yellow shirt and they cry a little inside. As an equal opportunity fashion lover, I decided it was time to put a stop to it by taking my favorite neutrals out of the closet and into the sunlight.

Now, I didn’t pick just any neutrals, I picked neutrals that reminded me of one of my favorite places. The beach! A beach-blue ruffle skirt spices up my sand-colored cardigan. I then added an oh-so-cute owl pendant to complete the beach-inspired neutrals look!
What clothing of yours have you been ignoring lately and what will you do to add it back into your life?

Fashion Tip: Be inspired to wear your neutrals by incorporating some of your favorite accessories! Any color is fair game for your accessories so be creative with those pendants, necklaces, or fashionable earrings!

Cardigan: Taken from my sister

My airport oasis: Mango

Mickey Mouse ears, screaming children, and large crowds. No, it’s not Disney World.  It’s the Orlando International Airport. I am acutely aware of the environment at this airport because I visit it more than I visit my own parents. For my day job, I get the pleasure (and stress) of traveling all over the United States and at times it can be several times a month. So, it’s fair to say that I’m pretty familiar with this airport. Due to my constant visits and wait times, I’ve perused (more than once) the shopping center found before you reach the security line. Come on; don’t act like you wouldn’t either! Usually, I’m underwhelmed (to say the least) at the stores at the airport. They are good enough to pass the time but rarely do I dish out money to purchase anything. The mood to shop quickly disappears when I’m dealing with lost tourists, luggage, and annoyed sales associates. Well, on my most recent trip I saw an oasis, right in the middle of the airport. As I passed by the crowds checking their flights on the screen, I saw a sign from the corner of my eye…GASP! Could it be? A Mango store in Orlando!! Eeek!!

I rushed over to make sure this wasn’t just an illusion. My heavy laptop and big coats didn’t slow me down and I just kept saying, “it’s not a mirage…it’s not a mirage.” It wasn’t! There it was in all its glory! Oddly enough, there were no large crowds, no lost tourists, and no screaming children. It truly was an oasis. The sales associates were welcoming with their warm smiles and the clothes sparkled under the decorative lights. It’s official, Mango has returned to Orlando. Obviously, I purchased a few goodies so stay tuned to see how I styled some of their amazing spring pieces!!

It’s a Bird, It’s a Train… No, it’s Fashion!

You may have noticed that I have a fascination with old trains (see this post).  No surprise that I was intrigued by this colorful and whimsical one. I couldn't resist striking a pose with a train that looks like it was pulled straight out of a 1920’s children’s toy set! This life sized toy brought memories of my own childhood. I quickly realized it would be the perfect match for my playful bird blouse!

The pattern of vibrant birds reminds me of the bright shirts I would wear in elementary school. But now it’s a modernized and mature version. As soon as I saw the blouse my 5-year old inner Iris screeched with joy. I quickly snatched it up! She screeched again when I passed this train. I felt like little Iris playing with my old train set while wearing my Rainbow Brite inspired outfits. Life sized toys mixed with fanciful fashion…what more can a little girl ask for?

What fashion brings back memories of your childhood?

Fashion Tip: Bored of pairing your patterned tops with solid colored bottoms? Try pairing it with tweed bottoms. Tweed will add color and texture to your patterned tops!

Sofia Vergara Clothing Line Blogger Style-Off

The title says it all. A style-off! How fun is that? I love competitions where I don’t have to sweat and that mostly involve shopping! The challenge was to style Sofia Vergara pieces from her new spring collection. We were given a $200 Kmart gift card and sent on our way to get our “style on”. Admittedly, the last time I entered a Kmart was when I was about 12 years old. So I skeptically previewed the collection online before accepting the challenge. To my surprise, Kmart had seriously stepped up their game! So, I accepted the challenge and headed over to my nearest Kmart…

And that Kmart didn’t have her clothing collection. So, I went to the Kmart in the neighboring city and it ALSO didn’t have the collection. At this point I was wondering if this collection was just a figment of my imagination. Finally, after some phone calls to various Kmart’s in the city I hit a gold mine. Well, just a store that happened to carry two racks worth of her line. But hey – at this point I’ll take what I can get! A little disappointed but I dove in head first. I was pleasantly surprised to find that all I needed was a few racks to assemble fabulous outfits! It was certainly worth the hunt! Who would have thought these gems would be hidden away? I love that she has practical pieces that make it easy to put outfits together. Plus her accessories add just the right amount of trendiness to keep the look updated. Take a lesson from me, go ahead and venture out and experience her line for yourself. You may be surprised at the treasures that await you. Try it out here: http://kmrt.us/SVerBShop
