Ever have one of those moments where you are in a familiar place that you’ve been to several times but suddenly something feels very new? I get that feeling every time I look through my camera lens. Something about peering through that lens, changes the dynamic of a place. All of a sudden, items that seemed old and boring have a new life and look fresh and charming.
This was the case on my recent trip to Puerto Rico. I began to look at my once familiar home town in a different way. Around the island, I started to notice brightly colored buildings that I know I’ve passed hundreds of times but now they have a rare and exotic appeal. I especially noticed this phenomenon around my grandmother’s house. I’ve spent my entire life visiting that house and it always looked the same to me. But to my surprise, the moment I put the viewfinder to my eyes the entire house looked like new surroundings. What interesting little things I found and each with its own interesting little story. Dusting off a little trinket here and there and I found myself transported to the Fifties, Swinging Sixties, Nineteen Seventies, and straight back to present day. Wow, all that from just looking at a little porcelain teapot with my camera!
Now, what does this have to do with fashion? It would be foolish to believe that only fashion breeds fashion inspiration. In fact, everything inspires us (you just might not realize it!). Take a cue from my photo collage and start looking at your own environment a little differently. Maybe even pick up a camera. You would be amazed at what that does to how you style your look.
