It’s no secret that I’m a Florida girl. I have spent most of my life living in some city in Florida, which I love. However, I can’t help that occasionally I have angst over the memories of my distant hometown. It’s as if the island whispers to me at night, “Come back…we miss you”. I find myself longing for the hot summer days that I spent lazily on a hammock by the water. How did I rush so quickly through life that those carefree tropical summers seem like memories from a former life?
Now that I'm older I try to grasp any recollection of that island time. It’s no surprise I’m attracted to items or places that refresh those bygone memories. This was the case recently with memories triggered by the oddest little place, a peculiar brightly colored building. It instantly brought back memories of the lively colors in Old San Juan and vibrant hillside houses of Yauco, Puerto Rico. Maybe those memories weren’t so distant after all?

With memories rushing back, I knew I had to take photos here. I began setting up when a strange but sweet looking little round man popped out. I panicked and explained I just wanted to take a few photos. His puzzled look changed to a warm smile and he told me to go ahead and take my time. In that instant, it felt as if he knew. He knew why I loved those colors. He knew because he loved them for the same reason.
I continue to be intrigued by the owners of this building that have no concerns with their oddly painted building in a sea of greys and beige. But mostly I admire their indifference and appreciate the little taste of the Caribbean that they provide this town.
